Pasta with Tuna Sauce: A Simple, Delicious, and Comforting Recipe

Today, we bring you a simple, quick, and delicious recipe for pasta with tuna. You can use any type of pasta you like—tagliatelle, spaghetti, penne, fusilli, or others. For this recipe, we’re opting for spaghetti.

To create the most flavorful sauce, the type of tomato sauce you use is essential. Homemade sauce made with garden-fresh tomatoes is ideal, but any high-quality sauce will do. We also recommend using tuna in oil rather than in brine. The olive oil from the can will be used to gently sauté the garlic, adding extra richness to the dish.

Another tip: choose tuna chunks instead of shredded tuna for a better texture. This recipe is quite similar to a classic pasta with tomato sauce but with the added protein and flavor of tuna. Let’s get started!

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of water (at least 2 liters) to a boil. Add a generous pinch of salt and a drizzle of olive oil to prevent the pasta from sticking.
Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti and cook it according to the time recommended on the package (usually 8–10 minutes).
Drain the pasta when cooked but avoid rinsing it with cold water. To keep the pasta from drying out, cover it with a lid while you prepare the sauce.
  • Peel and finely chop the garlic. Open the tuna cans and reserve the oil for cooking.
Heat the tuna oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and sauté lightly until fragrant, being careful not to overcook it, as burnt garlic can taste bitter.
Add the tuna chunks and stir for a few minutes. Then, pour in the tomato sauce, add fresh basil leaves, and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Let the sauce simmer gently for 10–15 minutes over low heat, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  • Place the cooked spaghetti on plates and ladle the rich tuna and tomato sauce generously over the top.
Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese (Parmigiano Reggiano) over the dish. Serve immediately and enjoy!
